Breast augmentation, or a ‘boob job’ to you and me, are one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the UK. Whether it’s going bigger or smaller, more and more women are undergoing the knife in a quest to get that body-confidence they’ve always wanted. At The Daily Struggle, we’re a big fan of anything that makes you feel good about yourself (provided you’re doing it for you, and not for a man!) but there are some things you need to know before you get a boob job:
You can’t go from small to ginormous in one boob job
If you’re currently a small A cup, don’t expect to go to an E with one boob job procedure. It’s important to have realistic expectations, and you need to give your body and skin time to adjust to drastic changes. If you have got your heart set on huge boobs (and why not!?) your surgeon will probably suggest going up a couple cup of sizes at first, then increasing the implant size over the course of a few years.
You might lose feeling in your nipples
Whilst breast augmentation shouldn’t affect your ability to breastfeed in the future (although this is something you should discuss with your surgeon beforehand) you might find that you lose sensation in your nipples afterwards. But even if you do lose sensation, your nipples will still react normally to cold temperatures or stimulation, even if you can’t feel it yourself.
You will have the choice of two different implants
Silicone implants are the most popular choice, with 84% of women opting for this type in 2016, but you will also have the choice of saline implants. Both have their pros and cons; silicone tend to look and feel more realistic but can be more difficult to detect a rupture in, whilst saline can sometimes show ripples in certain areas as they have a water-like filling. Make sure you discuss both options with your surgeon beforehand.
A boob job can affect your posture
Just like natural breasts can affect your posture, so can implants – so keep your frame in mind. If you choose an implant size proportional to your frame, you will see little effect on your posture but huge ones might cause back problems down the line.
Your first boob job probably won’t be your last
Unfortunately, whilst implants are pretty sturdy, they don’t last forever. 25% of women tend to need another surgery after 10 years due to a number of different factors from weight loss, to pregnancy – or even just a change in preference.
