You’re either a pro at applying winged eye liner or the thought brings you out in a nervous sweat. I am definitely the latter. But over the years I have perfected the winged look enough to feel happy with the overall look for those super glam looks. So here’s my tips on how to do winged eyeliner.
The thing to remember with winged eyeliner, everyone likes a different look and everyone applies it differently depending on lots of different factors including the shape of your eyes. So, don’t compare your eyeliner to anyone else, because we all have different shaped eyes and skin tones.
There are lots of different eyeliner types out there, including pencil, liquid and gel.
For the perfect winged look, I would always suggest using a liquid and to make it even easier make sure that liquid is in the form of a felt tip pen, this really helps to control the product upon application. If you feel the pigment isn’t dark enough from a felt tip liner, use this as your base and once you’re happy with the shape trace over it with a darker liquid liner.
If you always feel like the wing ends up going crazy, use some tape (I use boob tape!) to structure where you want the wing to sit. Place the tape underneath your bottom lash and angle it based on how dramatic you want the wing.
To start, take your liquid liner from the middle of your lid and draw outwards, I always like to start in the middle as its much easier than starting near the tear duct. Follow the lash line and use the tape to guide how far out you want the flick. Ensure it is completely dry before you remove the tape. You can then use an angled brush and some dark eyeshadow over the top to complete the look.
The key is to go SLOW and try and keep your hand as steady as possible.
If you’re finding your hand is shaking on the lid, tap small dots along the lash line and join them up, I always rest my elbow on a table when I am applying too to try and keep my arm steady.
My favourite tried and tested eyeliners are Eyeko (these are amazing!) Maybelline (a great budget buy) or Morphe (highly pigmented).
To perfect a winged look really does just take practice, the more you try it out the easier it will hopefully become!
