How to Choose the Best Serum for Your Skin

At this stage, we all know the skincare basics but when it comes to serums it’s probably the one area people seem the most unsure about. I think it stems from how many different serums there are available, do we want hydrating, or do we want to brighten? What about anti-aging? The list is endless. How do we know the best serum for our skin types?

Best Serum

Are they worth it? And how do you find the best serum for your skin?

The serum is a topical treatment that delivers active ingredients straight into the skin. A thinner texture than a moisturiser they are typically water-based so when applied to the skin they usually sink straight in and get to work almost immediately. Applying my serums is probably my favourite step of my skincare routine.

When do you apply?

This one’s easy! Always after cleansing but before moisturising.

Why should you use a serum?

For me, serums are the one product you can truly see a difference in when you use them. Lightweight and fast-absorbing they’re usually a thin, fluid-like consistency and can often feel like you haven’t got anything on the skin, which is great if you’re having a no-makeup day! The majority of serums are oil-free so if you’re worried about breakouts or clogged pores don’t be!

One of my favourite reasons for using serums is how effective they are. Whatever your skincare concern there is a serum out there that can target your complaint. They’re super easy to layer and always leave my skin feeling hydrated and soft.

Which is the best serum for you?

Depending on your own skincare concern you will be able to find the best product that will work for you.

Looking to plump the skin and add some moisture? Opt for a hydrating serum, they include ingredients that draw water into the top layer of the skin and most will contain hyaluronic acid and glycerin. These are my most popular as they work for pretty much all skin types.

Favourites of mine include the Vichy Mineral 89 Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Serum and the Loreal Hyaluronic Acid Revitalift Serum.

Looking to brighten your skin and fade any pigmentation or dry spots? Opt for a brightening serum with chemical exfoliants that remove dead, pigmented cells. Key ingredients to look for are Vitamin C and niacinamide. However, if you have acne I would avoid these as they can contain an acid that isn’t suitable for sensitive or acne-prone skin.

If you suffer from large pores there is even a serum out there for you in a pore minimizing serum that works to reduce the look of large pores by exfoliating the skin and decreasing any sebum. Key ingredients include Niacinamide and salicylic acid. My favourite is Paula’s Choice, you can also buy travel-size serum bottles to try it out for yourself.

If your concern lies with anti-aging opt for a serum that promises to target fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity. These serums usually contain retinoids, peptides, and Vitamin C, for me adding one of these serums into your routine from the age of 25 is the key to keeping your skin looking younger for longer. My favourites are either the Kiehls Midnight Serum or the Mavala Anti-Age pro day serum or if you’re on a budget opt for The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid.

Whichever serum you decide to opt for, ensure you stay consistent and always add in before your moisturiser and after cleansing for best results.
