Backpacking in the Philippines; The Best Islands to Visit

While most people backpacking around the Philippines stick to the South-East Asian favourites of Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, the ones that commit to the flight to this Pacific archipelago are rewarded in more ways than they could imagine. Think white sands, incredible sea life, soaring mountain peaks and Instagram-perfect waterfall swings. The Philippines is a backpacker’s paradise and these are five of the islands we think every backpacker must visit.

5 Islands to visit if you’re backpacking around the Philippines

SIQUIJOR

The land of witchcraft and black magic, the mystical island of Siquijor combines waterfalls, paradise beaches and Friday night parties at Czar’s House, and is rightly a backpacker favourite when visiting the Philippines. Beachfront accommodation is affordable (most backpackers base themselves in San Juan) and renting a motorbike from just £5 per day is the best way to explore the island. Don’t miss out on the famous Cambugahay Falls – just be sure to set your alarm early for the best photo opportunities on the Tarzan swing!

SIARGAO

One of the most celebrated surf spots in the world, the teardrop-shaped island of Siargao has grown in popularity over the last few years for backpackers searching for affordable paradise. Feeling adventurous? Try your hand at surfing (well, you’re in the right place!) or wakeboard among the palm trees at Siargao Wakepark. For something a little more relaxing, gather together fellow backpackers and arrange an island hopping tour. Marvel at the turquoise waters of Scuba Lagoon, swim with the sting-less jellyfish of Sohoton Cave or relax on Naked Island. Relaxed vibes and a great backpacker atmosphere make Siargao a must-visit.

PALAWAN

Far from a hidden gem, Palawan is no secret amongst backpackers but is a solid choice for those looking to discover all that the Philippines has to offer on a budget. In just an easy 90-minute flight from Manila you can experience Puerto Princesa’s Underground River, catch up on your travel diaries from the beach hammocks in Port Barton, check out the insane islands of the Bacuit archipelago in El Nido and explore the underwater wrecks of Coron. It’s popular for so many reasons.

BOHOL

Home to the adorable tarsiers, unique Chocolate Hills and budget-friendly island hopping, Bohol is an eco-tourism paradise. Whether you want to party with other travellers on Alona Beach or get completely off the grid in Anda, Bohol has something for every backpacker. It’s a great base to explore nearby Camiguin and Apo Island too. A stay in Bohol will also give you the chance to check out backpacker-favourite Shaka (you can also find them in El Nido, Siargao and Moalboal). No visit is complete without trying one of their instagram-friendly smoothie bowls!
