Can CBD oil help to ease period pain? We spoke to Our Remedy – the CBD oil designed specifically with women in mind – to find out more:
What is CBD?
CBD is a natural plant extract which comes from the Cannabis plant. Unlike THC – which is also found in the Cannabis plant in varying degrees – CBD contains absolutely no psychoactives, and is approved in a number of cases for medicinal purposes.
For example, Sativex and Epidiolex are two pharmacy approved medicines made with CBD.
There have been no reported cases of injury of any type due to CBD and it is considered harmless and entirely benign.
As CBD has no psychoactive properties, it can not lead to the ‘high’ effect., So, all legal CBD items legally sold in the UK contain less than 0.2% THC. If you experience a genuine high sensation from CBD, you may want to consider it’s source as this may indicate an illegal product.
Humans (and dogs) have an endocannabinoid system. These are receptors in the body that respond to cannabinoids and many other organic elements and produce a natural response. This can see natural pain-killers like Serotonin being released into the blood stream when CBD is consumed.
Can CBD oil help with period pain?
While there are no published research studies on CBD usage for period pain relief, cannabinoid expert Dr Dani Gordon told Refinery29* that it does have ‘well studied anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects across a wide range of chronic pain conditions’.
And for the many women who suffer daily with debilitating cramps, bad mood swings and crippling anxiety around that time of the month, despite having tried all the over-the-counter remedies to no avail or who are keen to go down the natural route, CBD has been a logical option to try.
And one natural health brand in particular has been formulated with women’s wellness in mind.
Our Remedy is an organic and vegan oil made with a unique blend of grape seed, CBD and two key essential oils; clary sage and peppermint.
In this product, the natural healing properties of CBD are teamed with clary sage, which may help alleviate menstrual cramps and hormonal change effects, PMS symptoms such as bloating, mood swings and compulsive eating could be soothed. Peppermint is also widely known for it’s muscle relaxing benefits, which may help with PMS related cramping.
Made in the UK and beautifully packaged with sustainable, recycled materials – for each bottle of OurRemedy sold, the brand donate compostable sanitary products to Bloody Good Period, the leading Period Poverty Charity.
Founder of Our Remedy, Rachel Mason said: ”Self-care is important, but it doesn’t need to be selfish care. 1 in 4 women miss work due to period poverty, so we’re helping out. When you buy OurRemedy, you’re helping too.
How to take CBD oil for period pain
Drops in your tea or coffee:
Whether you prefer a herbal tea, an English breakfast or a black coffee in the morning, adding a few drops of CBD Oil into the mix can be a great way to introduce it into your lifestyle.
Usual notes suggest that it takes a week for CBD to establish itself in your body, so they suggest keeping a diary over a number of weeks and recording how you feel in different areas with a simple score. Ease of sleeping – mood swings (scored by others perhaps) etc. This will give you a guideline as to whether you should up the dose or could lower it.
With your skincare routine:
Many women have a strict morning and evening skincare routine, which is not only fabulous for maintaining glowing, healthy and hydrated skin but also acts as a moment of self-care in among our busy routines. So it makes natural sense to use this morning and evening ritual to remember to take your CBD. Keep your bottle in your bathroom cabinet and take your dose twice a day as you conduct your skincare routine. Our Remedy advise that to begin with, you aim for 50mg per day, split into two doses. One half pipette twice a day.
In your juice:
The addition of Peppermint provides Our Remedy with a subtle flavour, steering away from the typical hemp, earthy oil-taste that many CBD Oil products have. The fresh mint flavour also means that it works very well in a glass of juice or fruit infused water.
Our Remedy CBD is available online and from select stores from RRP £29.99. The brand also offer plastic-free refills for returning customers, with a £5 product discount incentive for doing so.
