Whether you’re long distance dating or following the lockdown rules from just down the road, there’s a knack to distance relationships. Here’s 5 ways that a little goes a long way when it comes to making the effort in your relationship while times are tough.
Keep long distance dating conversation fresh
Let’s face it, if you’re at home all day during lockdown there’s very little new news you’re gonna have, and if you’re a key worker you might want to leave the stress of the day behind you. With fewer things to talk about, it’s a slippery slope until you’re in the over-comfortable “What dya ‘ave for yer tea, Dave?” zone so try and keep things fresh and interesting. Rediscover each other, just like when you first got together and wanted to know everything about each other, and talk about any new life goals you have.
Play games
Whether it’s video games, online quizzes, or pictionary over Facetime, it’s important to remember how to have fun. However, research shows that couples who take part in activities where they’re on the same side against a common opponent or challenge forge a stronger bond. So if skype charades doesn’t help you feel closer then you’ll have to make an Escape Room game top of your post-lockdown to do list!
Movie nights
The cinemas might be shut but there’s no reason you can’t make some time for a long distance movie night. Book a time, clear your schedule, get the popcorn at the ready. You can connect via Netflix party or even face time so you can experience the film together but even if you don’t, there’s something comforting about knowing you’re both doing the same thing at the same time no matter how far apart you are.
Sexy selfies
It’s tempting to show your soulmate what a horrifying number the pandemic lockdown is doing on your eyelashes since your access to professional lash techs was rudely curtailed. And while it’s important that you choose to be with someone who thinks you’re cute with or without your D curl Russians, it’s still nice to make an effort in the selfie department and remind them what they’re missing now and again.
Ditch the day pyjamas and slip into something a little less… stained and crumby. Put on a bit of natural slap, some flattering lingerie, and let them know what they’ve got to look forward to when this is all over.
Make plans
Think about what you miss doing together, and make plans for when you can see each other again. Book your favourite restaurant, plan days out, and choose a hotel to stay in to make a nice change of scene from the same four walls you’ve seen far too much of lately! Get on Tripadvisor and decide how you’re going to definitely see the world together once this is all over.
Bella’s not like other mums – she’s a cool mum. If by ‘cool’ you mean addicted to carbs and dirty stories, with a special talent for doing the school run with yesterday’s knickers hanging out of the leg of her leopard print leggings. Writing about everything from taping your tits up with pot noodle lids, gag reflexes and how many people have stuck fingers up her bum (purely for professional reasons) she also has a cultured side: get on her for history, entertainment and social issues.
