You might be thinking you can’t pull off a red lip, but I am here to tell you EVERYONE can rock a red lip.
I love nothing more than whipping out one of my many red lipsticks whether it be for a casual day time look or to add the finishing touches to my evening make up. A good red lipstick will always make you feel super confident, in control and ready to handle anything (this may sound dramatic but believe me it’s true!)
A red is a classic for a reason.
Here are a few of my hints and tips on how to wear red lipstick and what to look for to achieve that kick ass pout.
How to wear red lipstick rule number one: line your lips
I may sound like a broken record here but it’s never more important to line your lips than it is when you’re wearing a bold colour, especially if your lips are on the thinner side. If having thinner shaped lips is what is putting you off don’t worry! Just line your lips, fill in with colour and add a tiny amount of gloss in the middle of you lips, this will give the appearance of plumper fuller lips.
Use a lip brush to apply
If you’re worried about the intensity of a lip colour or you’re a complete beginner invest in a lip brush to apply your lipstick, that way you can control and build up the colour until you’re happy with it.
Go to the experts
I am a lover of the high street make up products but when it comes to my lipsticks, I am never too far from a Mac counter, I do honestly think they are the best for the range of colours, finishes and just good value for money. And if you’re unsure which red to go for they will be happy to help. My favourites are Ruby Woo, Relentlessly Red or Russian Red. All various shades, all super fabulous.
Try a different finish
Once you become more confident with the colour and how to wear red lipstick, now is the time to play around with the finishes. I LOVE a matte finish; however, this can be quite intense. If I were to purchase a red for my mum who looks fabulous in her early sixties, I would go for a satin finish which is softer, and I would always suggest using a primer. My go to is Mac Prep and Prime.
Worried about your skin tone?
Don’t be, there really is a red for every skin tone. If you’re fair skinned and blonde like my sister I would suggest a more coral blue tone or even a coloured gloss.
If you’re of an olive complexion like myself I tend to go for more of a Mediterranean brick red tone. Darker skin can handle a real pop of vibrant colour, top it off with a clear gloss and this look will really turn heads.
Overall, playing around with what works for you is what make up is all about, and remember there are no rules!
