Could I have been any more excited when I got a text saying that afternoon tea had been booked at The Shankly. I have eaten here a couple of times and thought the food was amazing. Even better, it was a January deal and 2 for 1. Does this mean I can have an afternoon tea for two all to myself?!
For those of you who don’t know, The Shankly Hotel is dedicated to a past Liverpool Football Club manager, Bill Shankly. There is plenty of unique memorabilia around the place about Bill and LFC. As you walk in, there’s a touching tribute to the 96 fans who lost their life during the Hillsborough tragedy. It is 96 candles and each one has the name of each person who lost their life.
The football theme is huge but if (like me!) you’re not a big football fan it’s still ridiculously enjoyable. The place seems so luxurious and I love the décor. Even each individual toilet has a mirror. Not just any mirror so I took a picture which will explain it better than what I can!
The dining/ drinking area is The Bastion Bar and Restaurant. And back to the best afternoon tea Liverpool has to offer! My excitement continued when I saw the menu. Who has ever had a vanilla slice for afternoon tea? Not me; definitely one of my favourites! As well as Victoria Sponge. Yummy! Can you tell my eyes went straight to the dessert part of the menu?! We were not disappointed when a mini picnic bench of delights came our way. I tucked into the cakes first!
I am not normally a savoury person but OMG, the ham hock and cheese in the pretzel bun was something else. I was even tastily surprised with the ham and mustard inside the croissant. There were these individual tarts – one lemon and one chocolate and caramel which were out of this world. I don’t think I spoke other than ‘mmm’s for about 15 minutes as I gobbled it all up! All washed down with a refreshing pot of peppermint tea. You can get a glass of fizz so even more of a treat!
The scones were warm which is always a bonus as the thick cream just melts. I am getting a bit sad it’s all over as I write this and am reminded how delicious it was. With such a good offer (which works out £10 per person), I just might have to go again!
The staff were so helpful. Four of us went and it was someone’s birthday the week before, so we mentioned it to the staff and got even more cake with Happy Birthday in white chocolate writing. Two of our party went home with cakeaways! Unfortunately, not myself as I ate every last crumb.
One thing I noticed was a sign saying Private Dining. Imagine! I need to do my research on that and see if (and how!!) I could get involved. I am assuming it’s for football players and wags so one can only hope! 😉 But with such a good offer on (and even without), this is a definite on your ‘to do’ list. Who doesn’t love cake? And even better when it’s a great variety of cake and savoury treats in a stunning atmosphere.
