Whether it’s a macrame wall hanging, or a knitted plant holder, this retro style has made it’s way back into our homes. But what exactly is macramé, and where can you get the most unique pieces from?
What Is Macrame?
Simply put, Macrame is the art of tying knots to create gorgeous textiles, wall hangings, plant holders and many other beautiful decorations. Back in the 13th century, macramé was used by Arabic weavers to create fancy fringes on the edges of shawls – but many people believe that it’s origin dates back even further to third-century China where lanterns, hangings, and ceremonial garments sported elaborate knots.
Back in the 70’s, macrame became the go-to fabric for both home décor and fashion; and macramé belts, vests, bikinis, plant hangers, and furnishings exploded onto the scene – but this fad was short lived and by the 80’s the style was on it’s way out. That is, until 2020.
Made popular through social media, macramé is back… and it’s big! As the current must-have for any contemporary or boho space this gorgeous textile helps to break up prints and add a bit of texture to your walls.
So, if you love the look but don’t fancy the work, here are some of the most beautiful Macrame you can buy online at the moment:
