The Albert Dock boasts one more jewel in its crown, as Mexican taqueria Madre Liverpool comes to town. Sat along the beautiful dock front facing the city, this new bar & restaurant looks to be a great inclusion for our wonderful city and brings something a little different to dockside dining. From the team behind both Belzan (Smithdown Road) and Volpi (Duke Street), this is a new independent venue that hopes to make its mark on Liverpool’s iconic dock.
‘Madre’ means ‘Mother’ in Spanish and therein lies how the place wants you to feel, like you’re one of the family here. The space is cosy, with the bar area’s seating consisting of long benches, and the menu is not at all stuffy, after all it’s Mexican, how could it be? The perfect surroundings for a casual night of food and drink.
The drinks menu at Madre Liverpool was, as you can probably expect, chock full of margaritas. We got to sample a few ourselves and it was honestly difficult to pick a favourite, but any boozy slushy has my vote. If that’s not your thing (weird, but okay) there’s plenty more to choose from here with a variety of drinks that are sure to cater to anyone’s thirsts. Drinks, though, ain’t what this place is about… though it certainly helps.
If you come to a place that calls itself a taqueria, you’re expecting a taco like no other and from the off, they delivered that. Both their tacos and their nachos are black, as they’re made from blue corn, which besides making them stand out more, is apparently healthier. Not that I’ve ever went to a restaurant and cared about how healthy something is, mind. The taste is still just as great.
We got to sample the Pork Al Pastor (spit roast pork, pineapple, chile de arbol, salsa verde), Pollo pibil (Slow cooked chicken, orange, habanero, pickled red onions) and the Hongos con chipotle (Deep fried mushroom, chipotle aioli, roasted pasilla chile, salsa negra). And to share, the Carne Asada BBQ Steak, an absolute powerhouses in it’s own right and absolutely brimming with flavour. To finish, we tried the Churro French Toast, served with salted caramel and ice cream! Special shoutout goes out to the mushroom tacos that I assumed would be the worst of the three and turned out to be the absolute best.
Madre is a fantastic addition to the Liverpool docks scene. It’s a fun and casual space that is very much welcome to an area that suffers from being a little stuffy at times. I imagine when summer of 2020 rolls around it will absolutely be the place to go to eat tacos and drink cervezas in the sun.
