Touted as one of Jennifer Aniston’s fave beauty hacks, marine collagen is being hailed as nature’s secret to looking and feeling your best. Promising to help with everything from glowing skin to healthy flexible joints, this supplement is storming the beauty industry – so we caught up with Nutritionist (BSc) and Specialist in Health Psychology (PhD), Dr. Naomi Newman-Beinart to find out more.
What are the benefits of marine collagen?
Our skin starts to lose it’s natural elasticity as we get older, but a collagen supplement can help to replace what we lose with age. After the age of 18 begin to decrease, and this speeds up by 1.5% per year after the age of 30.
In ancient times, humans were thought to have consumed a lot more collagen than we do now, but modern food processing has removed most of the collagen from our diets – so it’s important to supplement it with vital Marine Collagen Protein in order to help our bodies to regenerate so we can live full, active lives.
Studies over the past 5-10 years have shown that taking a collagen supplement can help to support and improve skin hydration, improve joint and bone health, aid with weight loss and even help with hair growth.
But where does it come from?
As more and more people steer towards flexitarian diets and eat less meat, the concept of getting your collagen from an animal seems less appealing to most.
Marine collagen in its simplest form, is collagen sourced from fish, as opposed to the more traditional bovine collagen which is beef collagen peptides sourced from cows.
Generally, marine collagen is taken from fish skin and fish scales, then hydrolysed (broken down) into a more bio-available form to digest. When choosing a marine collagen, it’s important to pick a high-quality product that has been tested for toxins and is deemed safe.
This is important because marine collagen is sourced from fish, and fish products can contain heavy metals. I use Correxiko Wild Marine Collagen on a daily basis as part of my health regime.
Correxiko is a highly ethical company that was founded by a medical doctor, their marine collagen is sourced from wild-caught deep-sea fish from Canada. They only use the fish skin, and not the cheaper fish scales like many other brands on the market. Thanks to a double hydrolysed process, Correxiko collagen has an industry leading micro-particle size which leads to enhanced absorption with more effective, extensive results.
Is it anti-aging?
In 2018, a randomized, double-blind, placebo- controlled study was undertaken in order to further investigate the effects of oral marine collagen peptides on the human skin. A group of 40-60 year old women were given daily oral collagen and found significant improvements in skin hydration, wrinkling and elasticity after only 12 weeks, when compared to women who took a placebo supplement. So yes, we believe that it can have a significant anti-aging effect on your skin!
