33 years ago, Disney released the unofficial Wizard of Oz sequel, and soon to be cult classic, ‘Return to Oz’ – and children across the GLOBE were traumatised for life. So, we thought we’d celebrate over 30 years since the film’s release by re-living some of the most horrifying moments from our youth.
Right from the start, Return to Oz is bleak. Dorothy and her family are slowly trying to rebuild their lives after their farm is destroyed by a tornado.
The bones of Return to Oz is that Dorothy, A CHILD, keeps talking about her visit to Oz so is sent by her ‘loving’ Auntie Em to a dodgy AF mental institute where a crazy Doctor tests ‘electric healing treatments’ on her.
Oh yeah, and they’re about to kill her favourite chicken for not laying eggs.
In between this glorified Electric Shock Therapy, Dorothy is locked in a cell and left to listen to a brain-dead screeching from other abused patients.
Dorothy escapes, giving the audience a brief moment of relief… before she nearly fucking DROWNS.
You guessed it, she makes it back to Oz… only to discover that the Yellow Brick Road is in ruins and the everyone has been turned to stone.
Dorothy doesn’t get a chance to grieve though, oh no. Because she’s about to get chased by the Wheelers
What are the Wheelers? I’m glad you asked. They’re basically human/trolley hybrids hell-bent on mayhem.
Luckily, Dorothy escapes from the blood-thirsty Wheelers, only to end up locked in a room with a cobweb-encrusted robot who turns out to be Tik Tok.
Tik Tok and Dorothy head to Princess Mombi’s castle to find out WTF is going on. Only to find her collection of human heads.
After around a 20-minute montage of heads screaming, Mombi imprisons Dorothy in a room with Jack. Oh, and Jack is a human/pumpkin hybrid that’s isn’t completely dissimilar to Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas – hello copyright infringement.
The pair break out and steal the Powder of Life from Mombi’s original head, forcing her now headless body to chase them.
All the while, all of the other heads just scream and scream and scream….
Anyway, it turns out Mombi is only the princess of this Isle of hell, and Dorothy needs to take up her beef with the Gnome King.
So, Dorothy, Tik Tok and Jack fly some sort of terrifying moose-headed-couch to meet him….
…only to find out he’s STOLEN THE RUBY SLIPPERS.
Although he’s a complete monster and all-round bad guy, the Gnome King has got quite an eye for design… and a fetish for turning living things into ornaments.
Now, we won’t ruin the climax of the film, but let’s just say the bad vibes get out of hand – and this is what the Gnome King looks like when he’s pissed tf off.
Luckily things get sorted, and peace is restored in the Emerald City when the Scarecrow is reinstated as king, despite clearly being a lunatic.
