I’m sure we all have elderly relatives who aren’t quite as spry as they used to be. It’s a real shame to see people who used to be so full of life lose some of their mobility and become less active as a result. It’s so important that you pay a bit more attention taking care of grandparents and when they’re a little more vulnerable.
The problem with most people over a certain age, though, is that they’re often a little too proud to accept any of your help. The elderly, specifically grumpy old men, don’t want to be seen as a burden and so will pass up on any help you offer them, even if they know deep down that they really need it.
Thankfully, there are ways around this. Taking care of grandparents while helping them regain a sense of independence will make them feel more relaxed in themselves and less self-conscious about being a burden on others. Here are some of the best ways to help the elderly get their autonomy back.
Bathrooms aides
We’ve all seen the usual advertisements featuring elderly people struggling to get in and out of the bath or be able to stand up in the shower. Slips, trips and falls are the most common problem for the elderly and can post serious hazards to their health which often ends up with a visit to hospital. It safe to say this is a problem definitely needs addressing.
Installing guard rails in the bathroom can really help give that extra bit of support when it comes to those awkward movements. Such a simple fix that is relatively cheap to follow through with, you’d be mad not to do it!
Help their mobility
Getting around when your joints start to seize up can prove a real problem when you start to age. We all have to get around, though, so there have to be ways and means of combatting this. A pro rider mobility electric wheelchair can be a life saver when it comes to getting around because there isn’t any need for physical exertion to get yourself around.
Don’t police their movements
So they want to go the shops by themselves, instead of quizzing them about whether they think it’s a good idea like a worried sick parent, just let them go. Letting them go about their day to day lives is important for making them feel like they can still live their life in peace.
Obviously, if they do have problems, then it’s important to provide them whatever they need. Whether that be a walking stick or a medical alert bracelet, just trust that you can give them responsibility for themselves, after all, they’ve been doing it all their lives anyway!
Sadly, not all illnesses are so easily treatable and mental issues like Alzheimer’s syndrome you can’t really afford to give someone their independence because they unfortunately become a danger to themselves. Make sure you treat them with care.
There we have it, three of the best ways to help your elderly grandparents feel a little more independent in themselves. If you have any more that you think we should add, feel free to let us know!
