This might sound totally crazy, but I didn’t actually know anything about Kuala Lumpur, didn’t know friends who had been etc. so really wasn’t sure what to expect. It soon became one of my top holiday destinations! We had 3 days in Kuala Lumper before we travelled onwards to Bali. 3 days is enough, but I also could have stayed longer.
We stayed at The Berjaya for the full 3 days in Kuala Lumpur. Our room was so spacious, and we had a great view of the city. The breakfast was fabulous, there was a piano bar, a lovely pool and sunbathing area and a fab gym (much needed so I can eat and drink my days away!). Plus a metro stop was right outside, making it even easier to explore. If (when!!!) I was to go back, I will happily stay here again.
3 Days in Kuala Lumpur: The Highlights
One of the highlights of this city was most definitely Dining in The Dark. What a fantastic experience!
First, they give you a welcome drink to whet your appetite and get you ready for your four courses of surprise food. You have a game to play with a blindfold on to get your eyes accustomed to the dark. We had to find paperclips in a pot of stones. Doesn’t sound great but it was! Shows how much we rely on our sight.
Then you are escorted into the dining room which is totally pitch black. The servers are visually impaired so it’s just everyday life for them. It really gives you appreciation of how they live and how amazing they are.
You’re not told the menu and have to try and guess what you’re eating. And you get a decent amount of food. There were four starters, two soups, three mains and five (yes, five!!) desserts. Each course comes at the same time and they’re in little dishes, so you can easily pick them up and move nearer to your mouth. Naturally, you’re scared of dropping the food all over yourself as you just can’t see. But we didn’t.
I love talking about food!! So, I was in my element. We sat discussing which flavours we could taste and trying to figure out what we were eating. Obviously you’re relying on your taste senses and as soon as someone says, ‘I think this..’ then you can taste what they are saying! I cannot rave about our server, AJ enough. He was just wonderful. He really explained everything well, got us thinking about what we were eating and injected humour into it. We had such a giggle and he was always on hand should we need anything else or have any questions.
After the food (and wine! We did wine pairing too), we left the dark room and they shared the menu with us. It’s great to see what you got right… and wrong! My favourite was crabmeat. I would never choose that off a menu normally! I would 110% recommend. And it was affordable too. All in all, four courses with the wine was less than £40 per person. Bargain!
Other things we did with our 3 days in Kuala Lumpur, were the Petronas Towers. They are the tallest twin towers in the world. We went up them and to the viewing deck and you got a wonderful view of the city. Same with the Kuala Lumpur Tower which is apparently the 7th tallest freestanding tower in the world. Such stunning architecture and really do take your breath away. We took the train to the Batu Caves one day. Again, stunning to look at, extremely busy and watch out for the naughty monkeys trying to steal anything they can! You can spend a good few hours here, in the caves and reading stories about the statues, not forgetting the obligatory photo for your social channels of you on the steps!
Shopping is fab, and the centres have everything from high street to designer. Although a bit strange when you’re so far away and spot a Dorothy Perkins! There isn’t just one area for shopping either. We had a mall next to our hotel and we had to go there a few times as we discovered the most amazing sweet cheese tarts. Like cheesecake. I cannot explain how good these were. Neeeeeeed! There are a few genuine designer fake areas too. Shame I wasn’t with my girlfriends as we would have spent hours looking for a decent Chanel! 😉 Central Market is worth a visit too with sooo many stalls, you can spend hours here. And they have decent food and lots of choice too.
I didn’t have a bad meal. We were encouraged to try street food which was so cheap and so good. From the chicken skewers with satay sauce to all veg. I even noticed someone eating a toad! Not sure how I felt about that…
As a summary, loads to do, amazing architecture, brilliant shopping, great food, happy hour cocktails, lovely people and super cheap so your money goes further. A must see on your bucket list.
