But first, what is World Book Day?

2nd March 2023 marks the 25th anniversary of World Book Day: a charity on a mission to help change children’s lives by making reading together and reading for pleasure a habit for life.

Recent studies by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development suggest that reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator for success in life, more than family circumstances, educational background, or income – not to mention being a great way to spend time with your little ones.

World Book Day celebrates this, along with a new generation of readers, authors, illustrators and publishers and is designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

The charity gives every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own, and you can see all of the £1 books that children and young people are able to choose for FREE with their £1 book tokens in March 2022.

3 reasons to use your local library in 2022

Our local libraries play a unique role in promoting reading in communities, and as a free public service they can provide a stepping-stone for kids and adults alike into the world of reading as well as supporting the education for more disadvantaged communities.

But do you get use out of your local library? Probably not.

In a world where the like of Amazon makes it so easily accessible for many of us to get new books, this huge and amazing part of our community is dying.

So, here are some reasons why you should make the effort to visit your local library with the kids in 2022.

visit local library

Get access to resources

As well as a plethora of new books to discover, your local library gives free access to computers and WiFi – as well as a number of other helpful resources, some of which you might not even know about!

For instance, many libraries have subscriptions to services or paywall content (papers and magazines that you need to pay to access) along with some of the most common are academic journals that could be useful while researching papers or projects for your classes.

Expand your skills and meet new friends

Your local library isn’t just a great place to build your knowledge by reading, they’re also a hub of activity.

There are all kinds of fun and supportive groups that meet up at local libraries for example:

  • Networking groups
  • Parent and baby support
  • Book clubs
  • Writing groups
  • Reading groups for kids and teens
  • Afternoon movies in the summer
  • Activity groups (knitting, bridge, chess, and others)

Your local library can be your key to a new hobby or even a new set of friends with similar interests.

Use it or lose it

It’s rare in this world that we live in to have somewhere that it not just free to take your little ones, but that welcomes them with open arms. But sadly, if we don’t make the most of this incredible resource they won’t be around for much longer. So why not make it a priority to introduce your family to the joys that your local library can bring.
